The Grange Institution Celebrates Improvement in Mental Mathematics and Reading Skills

The school took part in an externally validated assessment, Interactive Computerised Assessment System early this year. It offers a benchmark of our students’ performance against a wider range of schools, including the independent sector and international schools. This assessment is taken by over 200,000 children across the world in the same setting.

The students performed above their age cohort in all areas of the test components in Reading and Mathematics.

Success in Mental Mathematics

Towards the second half of 2023, students have begun engaging in mental math exercises without the use of calculators, concrete objects, or pictorial cues. As a result, there has been a 15% improvement in their performance compared to the previous year.

Students have also been introduced to Singapore Math heuristics skills that provide handles for unravelling challenging maths problems.

Improvement in Reading Abilities

In addition to mathematics, students at The Grange have seen a notable improvement in reading abilities, with a 14% increase in reading proficiency in the areas of word recognition, word decoding, comprehension and spelling.

This progress is a testament to the school’s focus on nurturing a love for reading through our literacy program. Recognizing the importance of early literacy, the school introduced initiatives such as parent-run reading sessions in our Year 2 class. By giving parents a platform to read to their children and discuss their favourite books, these sessions help to create a community of readers and inspire a love of reading in children at an early age.

Every year, students dress up as their favourite book characters and share book recommendations with each other, fostering a love for reading and storytelling.

Overall Development and Academic Growth

Overall, the developed ability of our students has improved by 12% compared to last year.  Developed Ability refers to children’s capacity to acquire knowledge. At The Grange, students are provided with a supportive environment where they can develop this ability and allow it to flourish through lifelong learning.

Commitment to Excellence

Students take ownership of their learning, fostering habits of lifelong learning and personal growth.

These achievements underscore The Grange Institution’s commitment to educational excellence. By continuously refining our curriculum and incorporating innovative teaching methods, we remain committed to ensure students are prepared to meet the challenges of the future.

Congratulations to all our students and teachers for their hard work and dedication.
